Connecting & choosing a server
How to pick the right location for speed, access and privacy.
The location you connect to affects your speed and the country websites think you're in.
Reading the server list#
| Indicator | What it means |
|---|---|
| Latency (ms) | How long a round trip to the server takes. Lower is more responsive. |
| Signal bars | A quick summary of latency: three bars for nearby servers, one for distant ones. |
| Load | How busy a location is. Less busy locations usually have more bandwidth available. |
Which location to choose#
- For speed: pick the closest location to you, ideally in your own country.
- For public Wi-Fi: any location works; the goal is the encrypted tunnel, so stay close for speed.
- For travel: connecting to your home country helps services that only work from there behave as usual.
Switching locations#
You can switch location at any time. The app closes the current tunnel and opens a new one; with the kill switch on, no traffic leaves your device unprotected while it does.
