Introduction

What Pivien is, what it protects, and how this documentation is organised.

Pivien is a VPN for people who want privacy without having to think about it. It routes your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server you choose, so the networks you connect through can't read what you send and the sites you visit see the server's address instead of yours.

What Pivien protects#

  • Your traffic on untrusted networks. Public Wi-Fi in cafés, hotels and airports can't read or tamper with what travels inside the tunnel.
  • Your IP address. Websites and online services see the IP address of the Pivien server, not the one assigned to you by your provider.
  • Your DNS lookups. The names of the sites you visit are resolved inside the tunnel instead of in the open.
  • Your connection when it drops. The kill switch is designed to stop traffic from leaving your device unprotected if the tunnel goes down.

What a VPN doesn't do#

A VPN is one strong layer of privacy, not a cloak of invisibility. Accounts you sign into, cookies, browser fingerprinting and the information you share yourself can still identify you. The security best practices page explains how to close those gaps.
